The Legacy of Foster Golf Links

In 1924, against all odds and mortgaged to the hilt, George Eddy took a bold leap of faith—purchasing 50 acres of land on the historic Foster homestead along the banks of the Duwamish River. By September of that year, he had already begun laying out what would become one of the region’s most beloved golf courses.

By February 1925, the Maple Grove Golf Course—as it was originally called—was ready for play. Despite being built through the harsh winter, golfers from across the Puget Sound flocked to experience Eddy’s vision firsthand.

On February 13, 1925, Foster Golf Links officially opened with a four-ball tournament. The honor of the first tee shot belonged to Governor Louis F. Hart. That day’s featured match saw Inglewood Club pro Walter Pursey and amateur Lee Steil triumph over Seattle Club pro Robert Johnstone and amateur Bon Stein in a thrilling 1-up victory. Pursey recorded the lowest score of the day with a 72, while Stein posted the best amateur round with a 78.

Green fees? Just 50 cents for an entire day of golf. The clubhouse? The old Foster farmhouse, where Mrs. Eddy herself prepared sandwiches for hungry golfers. This was more than a golf course—it was a family-run labor of love.

At 3,100 yards, the original nine-hole course was built to the standard of the time but featured two of the longest holes on the Pacific Coast:

  • Hole #5 – 656 yards, Par 6

  • Hole #7 – 598 yards, Par 6

These holes were later split into two when the course expanded to 18 holes in 1927. That year, Eddy acquired adjacent land, bringing the total footprint to 85 acres. He envisioned a 6,000-yard course, though for most of its existence, Foster Golf Links played between 5,000–5,500 yards.

What began as one man’s dream has stood the test of time, evolving into a cherished landmark in the Pacific Northwest golf community. Nearly a century later, Foster Golf Links remains a testament to George Eddy’s unwavering vision and passion for the game.
